We woke up with the sun and the barks of baby seals and made our way into Kaikoura, where we proceeded to lay on a beach for a couple hours in the sun (don’t you worry Mom and other parental type figures reading this, I wore sunscreen). The beach was made of tiny little rocks, and when Erin told me to go put my feet in the water, I couldn’t walk on them at all. I’m too ticklish. Every time I would try and take a step the tiny rocks would tickle the bottom my feet and I would end up laughing...I couldn’t help it. After our day of relaxation, we hitched a ride into Christchurch with two lovely old men named
Michael and Brian. They gave us a mini drive around tour of Christchurch and told us what has happened since the earthquakes. Over 600 buildings have already been demolished and there are still many, many more to go. One of the massive hotels in the city center is going to take at least $10 million to tear down. Even though a lot of the buildings look ok on the outside, they are condemned because of infrastructural damages. It was pretty sad to hear about and see how much this city has suffered. They dropped us off and we made our way to Hagley Park, our new home! For the night at least. We had a look around for a no camping sign and didn’t see any, but we still waited until nightfall to set up the tent, just in case. Our interview was the next
day at noon, so we woke up bright and early and began the hunt for a hostel. After seeing too many no vacancy signs, and finding only one room available in a motel for $195, we were beginning to worry. Because of our recent way of living, we happened to smell like a combination of mold and general homelessness and desperately needed a shower before our interview. We were finally directed to a hostel called At The Right Place. I had to use my credit card to pay for the room but it was pretty cheap and we had a nice shower and a place to put our bags. After refreshing ourselves we headed off to find Mega Advertising. Our “interview” ended up being more of a briefing and filling out paperwork, with the promise of more temp jobs in the future. Yay! Work! Money! Someone wants us! -K
