Since being back in New Zealand Erin and I have had some time to reflect on our last trip and what we learned what to do and not to do, while simultaneously learn new lessons this time around. And we have come to these conclusions:
1. Campervans still suck. You think with all that space they would be a little willing to pick up hitchhikers stuck out in the wind and rain. They never are.
2. You would think that we would remember how much it rained last time and how chilly it was. Apparently we didn't.
3. Now we know why you don't hitchhike at night! It's because you might freeze because no one will pick you up, or because if someone does decide to pick you up they are members of the Black Power gang. Rivals of the mongrel mob. Think Bloods and Crips, but less intense. (To be fair, he seemed like a very nice man. Kenji, represent!)
4. We need to remember to not take being passed by cars so personally. Even though it's hard not to when some of them laugh as they drive past.
a) with the exception of the assholes who put on their blinker and pretended to pull over, and then laugh as they drove past. That was without doubt personal.)
5. Fast food here is ridiculously expensive.
6. So is beer.
7. No plan is the best plan, especially while hitchhiking.
