Sheira of Atlantis

We set out from Christchurch in hopes of making it to Picton, which wasnt too difficult at all. Our main ride was Dave the "Happy Hippie" in his post truck. Dave had an awesome beard and the most mulletiest mullet I have ever seen. It went halfway down his back in a gingery ponytail. He was awesome. He got us to Blenheim, where his younger brother took over and got us the rest of the way (think spittting image...but with absolutely no hair). After getting from Christchurch to Picton via Dave and his brother, we set out to find the ferry terminal to see if it was open overnight. It wasn't. Fortunately it was warm enough that we decided sleeping outside without our tent wouldn't be too bad. As the night wore on, however, the temperature continued to drop. Erin and I were not above checking out the public bathroom stalls to see how roomy they were, and on the way we stopped into Atlantis Backpackers to use the internet and check our bank accounts. And that's when we met Sheira. Sheira the hostel owner is the most energetic, eccentric, excitable woman I have ever met. She would crack jokes at both us and herself. Her hair was similar to that of an electrified sheep, white-blonde and wooly and standing on end. She even told us to "call [her] Sheira, like sheering a sheep!" Once she got to talking she could go on for ages. But she was so much fun to listen to, and we had to keep watching to see what she would do next. She and her husband spent 5 years sailing from the States to New Zealand, stopping off wherever they wanted and just livin the dream life, and I wanted it to be mine. When we told her what year it was, she leapt up and grabbed the bars that were between her and us on the front desk and as we took a startled step back she exclaimed "10 years?! Has it really been 10 years ooohhhh myyy gosh!! Well time flies!" And settled back down into her seat. This lady introduced us to the possibility of sailing the globe back to America instead of buying a flight back (sadly, its hurricane season when we want to go) and extended a potential job to us if we found ourselves back in the area. Useful information. Because of her exhuberant nature and passionate speeches, we found ourselves agreeing with everything she said without even realizing it, until we had agreed to stay the night for $23. And then we couldnt really back track, and it was getting cold anyway, so we settled for it. Sheira didnt charge us though, she just grabbed the keys and charged towards the dorm to show us our rooms. If we do go back, she would be a blast to work with, albeit a little overwhelming.
